WHOOT!! Check out my cover for MY HIGHLAND LOVER

My Highland Lover

Maeve Greyson unleashes a thrilling tale of magic and desire as a feisty Southern gal falls into the arms of a rough-hewn Highland chieftain.

As the proprietor of a homeopathic store in rural Kentucky, Trulie Sinclair knows that her neighbors think she’s strange—but they have no idea how strange she really is. Trulie was born in Scotland in the thirteenth century to a line of time-traveling Highlanders. When Trulie’s grandmother convinces her to return to their homeland, Trulie jumps back in time, right onto the powerful chest of Gray MacKenna. Just as his steely good looks send ripples through her body, their fierce attraction will send ripples through the ages.

After his parents murder, Gray is consumed by thoughts of revenge. As the new chieftain of the MacKenna clan, he has reason to believe that there’s a traitor in his midst, and nothing—not even the bonny lass who suddenly drops from the sky—can distract him from his single-minded pursuit of the culprit. But when Gray learns that this sassy beauty possesses gifts beyond the sparkle in her eye, he allows his gaze, and his heart, to linger. While he hunts for the murderer, Gray finds in Trulie a precious companion—and a timeless love

Now here's a "GOLDEN" opportunity!

I'm so excited to announce the fabulous cover reveal for...
THE GOLDEN KEY LEGACY
a fantasy romance serial novel from HarperImpulse

The Golden Key Legacy, Book I: A
Furious Muse
~Available November 27, 2014~

Since the day of her birth, Princess Faedrah Austiere has been defined by he place within the kingdom. As the single heir to the half-blood gypsy king and his prophesied white queen, she is fiercely protected, shuttered inside an ivory castle and well-trained in the art of war. Yet neither her obligations as future queen nor the black infestation threatening her kingdom fail to hinder the mysterious pull of the antique armoire hidden in her parents' bedchamber. And stealing the golden key for a leap through time is the only way to confront the dark lord haunting her dreams.

One
face. The image of one defiant, relentless woman has been stuck in Rhys
McEleod’s head ever since he was old enough to paint her luscious curves on the
canvas. But the day she walks into his life off the street—sexier than hell and
itching for a fight—he’s not convinced she’s the same women he’s envisioned
since childhood. That is, not until he spots the golden key around her neck—an
object he’d never fully shown in any of his paintings.

Now
if he could just persuade his lovely muse he’s not the enemy. Unless the
elusive Faedrah Austiere learns to trust him, he’ll never have her in his
bed—the one place he’s convinced she belongs.

The Golden Key Legacy, Book II: The
Sacrifice
~Available December 18, 2014~

The
second Faedrah Austiere walked into his life off the canvas, everything in Rhys
McEleod’s world stopped making sense. Not only does her story sound like a
Grimm’s fairy tale, evidently he’s been cast as the villain. If that isn’t
enough, the mirror inside that old, beat up armoire at her uncle’s condo is
supposedly a doorway to another world. Ever since the pathway opened, something
inside him has seemed…off. If what his muse says is true, they are headed for
an epic showdown, but he isn’t about to let her go. Nothing is more important than
Faedrah’s protection, even if her parents refuse to accept him.

Though
certain their fates are bound by more than the golden key Princess Faedrah
wears around her neck, it is paramount Rhys’ true identity be kept secret.
Should news of his bloodline ever reach her kingdom, their entire quest to save
her people could be lost. Their only hope to prove his loyalty is to steal the
map to the dark lord’s Crystal Crypt. Yet her a plan endangers her beloved more
than the accusations he faces in her kingdom and, to escape evil’s grasp, she
and Rhys must take a leap of faith beyond her wildest imagination.

The Golden Key Legacy, Book III: A Wizard Rises
~Available January 29, 2015~

The
homecoming celebration held in honor of Princess Faedrah is fraught with
perilous frustration. Her nightmares have returned thricefold and, to her
horror, a horrendous blight has spread like a plague throughout the kingdom. Compounding
her worries, Rhys’ arrival in her world has been welcomed with the exact horror-filled
reaction she expected. Her beloved has been cast into the dungeons, and no amount
of arguing with the king and queen will prove he’s her fated love.

Magical
powers were supposed to be a gift, or so Rhys McEleod had always believed. Too
bad the second he landed in Faedrah’s world the legacy he inherited slammed
into his body like a weight. He’s got zero control and his constant visions of
Faedrah fighting an evil entity aren’t helping. At least her parents made the
right decision and stuck him away someplace safe. Until he can figure out his next
move, prove himself an ally and uncover the clues to stopping Faedrah’s
nightmares, he’s got no choice but to wait…and learn exactly what he’s become.

PRE-ORDER YOUR $0.99 COPY TODAY:  AMAZON / AMAZONUK

The Golden Key Legacy, Book IV: A
Time of Reckoning
~Available February 26, 2015~

Rhys
had one job to do. One measly errand that shouldn’t have been a problem, given
the nature of his powers. But when an old enemy reappears, detailing the result
of his actions, Rhys is forced to make a choice between a future with Faedrah
or dying before his time. Frustrated and out of options, he agrees to her
suggestion they to leap forward in time to the future…even though a good chance
exists his powers will be nothing but a memory in his world. Flying blind on a
wing and a prayer, they prepare to fight for everything they love against a
wizard of insurmountable power.

Faedrah
does her best to gather their closest allies. The sides are squared in a war to
control the future of both worlds. With the stakes so high, only one advantage
has been cast in their favor. The sigil of utmost protection inherent in Rhys’
signature. If not enough to thwart the evil awaiting at the Austiere gates, she
could find herself imprisoned in the future, while her kingdom and all those
she has sworn to protect are lost to the mists of time.

Highlanders, Passion and Bear Shifters --OH MY!!

In the vein of Jennifer Ashley’s Shifters Unbound series and Shelly Laurenston’s Pride Stories, Vonnie Davis introduces two wandering souls who discover that true love needs no words in this explosive, fantastical novel.
Able to telepathically communicate with animals, Paisley Munro has found meaning in her so-called gifts—something she often refers to as a curse—by working as a veterinary assistant. But while traveling to Scotland with her grandmother for a relative’s funeral, Paisley fears that she really has lost her mind. Out in the highlands, she hears distinctly human thoughts coming from a wild bear. Terrified and desperate, she returns to the lodge and collapses in the powerful arms of its owner, a mysterious man with whom she shares a simmering attraction.

Creighton Matheson and his fellow shape-shifters have been roaming this land freely for centuries. Now Paisley’s Grandmother may inherit his home, putting his kind in grave danger. His mistrust only deepens when he realizes Paisley can read his mind. Yet he cannot deny that this tantalizing woman makes him burn with desire—and hunger for the prospect of a tender love. Now Creighton must decide which would hurt more: revealing the truth or losing Paisley forever.

"A Highlander’s Obsession is a passionately sexy paranormal romance novel. It is a full length novel, but A Highlander’s Obsession is one of those stories you’ll want to read in a single sitting. It is perfectly paced and distractingly addictive. Creighton and Paisley share a passion that sizzles off the page, while the narrative is surprisingly witty. One minute Vonnie Davis’ writing had me shrieking with laughter, the next I was furiously fanning my face as Creighton and Paisley heated up the pages with their romance." – Love Reading Romance

How 'bout a four-pack of HOT HIGHLANDERS?

Strength, Love and Courage

Highland Healer Willa Blair
He needs her for his clan. He wants her for himself. Can he have both?

Toran Lathan never expected to become Laird, and never expected to meet a woman like Aileanna Shaw. Her healing ability is just what his people need, but Toran cannot resist her beauty. Yet will loving him destroy her ability to heal?

Aileanna Shaw has a healing touch--and a special talent she must keep secret. Stolen from her home by a marauding army, she's kidnapped again by the Highland Laird she heals. Is she a prize of war, or the prize of his heart?

While Toran battles the invading lowland army, he also battles his desire for Aileanna. And Aileanna must decide if she can trust her secrets to this fierce warrior who needs her talent, but wants her love.

Beyond a Highland Whisper Maeve Greyson
The last time Latharn MacKay walked among his kinsman was in Scotland of 1410. Sensuous and charismatic, all the women wanted him, but none could capture his heart. Latharn's charm became his curse when a dark sorceress didn't take rejection well. She snared his soul into a crystal globe until the one woman destined to be his love whispered his release. Now all Latharn has to do is find her and guide her to him without speaking a word.

One of the youngest archeologists in St. Louis of 2010, Nessa credits one thing for this achievement: the recurring dream of a heart-stopping Highlander since the summer she turned eighteen years old. Little does she know, he's not some fantasy cooked up by her subconscious. He's a trapped soul determined for Nessa to end his six centuries in hell. Can love prevail over the dark magic of a woman scorned?

Into The Scottish Mist Beth Anne Miller
Abby Sanders returns to her beloved Scotland after a long absence, seeking peace after a terrible tragedy. A chance detour reunites her with Ian Mackenzie, the love she left behind four years ago. Their attempt to rekindle their romance along the shore of Loch Ness is cut short when Abby vanishes.

After a desperate search for the woman he's spent four years trying to forget, Ian is forced to believe the unbelievable: he must travel through the mists of time to find Abby. But finding her is just the beginning. Trapped four hundred years in the past, Abby and Ian must find a way to end a bitter clan feud or sacrifice their return to the present and their future together.

Immortal Justice Faith V. Smith
Over a millennium ago, Highlander Darach MacRath was murdered. Resurrected by the Archangel Michael to fight demons as an Immortal Executioner, Darach now opposes all evil in the mortal world. His life is solitary—but when he rescues a young woman who not only sees demons but battles them herself, he is captivated by her courage and beauty.

Abigail Dupree is not looking for love. But when a tall, dark demon fighter with a sexy brogue intervenes in her hunt, she’s fascinated. She should run away—but then his gentle yet sizzling touch ensnares her heart.

When a demon from Darach’s past sets his sights on Abby, Darach will do anything to protect her—but for Abby, losing him would be worse than death. Together they must fight the demons of past and present, and the possibility that evil could destroy them both, before they find the gift of love.

Take care what ye wish...

All he wanted was to end his fate…
All she wanted was a new beginning…
They both got just what they asked just not how they planned.

Be careful what ye wish. Ye just might get it.

The Stone Guardian
Science + Data = Fact. At least that’s what pediatrician Emma Maxwell believes. Career-driven and guardian of her sister since their parents’ death, Emma doesn’t waste time on anything as unpredictable as dating. While starting a clinic on the Isle of Lewis, Emma chalks up the eerie pull of the Callanish Stones to jet lag or a shift in altitude.  But when she finds herself nose to nose with an ancient Scot babbling about magic, scientific explanations get pretty scarce. It has to be one of two things: Either Torin’s escaped from a mental institute or the stress of leaving college-age sister alone in the states has finally pushed Emma over the edge.
As Stone Guardian chieftain, Torin Grey serves the gods. When he attempts to change his fate, he discovers how fast disobedience is rewarded. His punishment? Stasis in a cursed sleep while all he cherished turns to dust. Torin can’t imagine a worse sentence –until he awakens to a world he no longer knows.
When the gods realize the beast they unleashed should never have been unshackled, they throw together modern-day Emma and ancient Torin to set the world aright. Now the mismatched pair must fully discover their powers, meld them and send the demon back to his hell. But what Emma and Torin don’t realize is there’s a troubling side-effect to melding magic. Hearts tend to get tangled too even when two souls aren’t comfortable in each other’s worlds.

Howdy Texas!

Happy June 10th! Happy Release Day to

Blame it on Texas

a contemporary romance by Amie Louellen

Every first love deserves a second chance.

© 2014 Amie Louellen

BlameItOnTexas-ART(1)Shelby Patterson has come back to Texas for one reason and one reason only—to get her husband to sign divorce papers. She’s worked hard to build her California bakery, where clients clamor for her one-of-a-kind creations.

Seven years after her disastrous marriage, she’ll finally have everything in perfect order—just as soon as Ritter McCoy signs the dotted line.

Ritt is still pissed that Shelby walked out all those years ago without giving their marriage a chance. Sure, they were young and had just lost the baby that had rushed them to the altar, but they’d loved each other beyond reason.

Ritt gave up his college baseball scholarship, only to have Shelby and her mom take his parents’ bribe money and run. If Shelby wants those papers signed, she’ll just have to wait until he’s good and ready.

Or maybe, before she flies the coop again, he can convince her the love they had between them is still there—and still hot enough to melt their hearts back into one.

Warning: This book contains a sexy Texas boy determined to recapture his first love. May also produce feelings of nostalgia and longing for slow kisses and sweet tea.

Enjoy the following excerpt for Blame it on Texas:

She should have known she’d find him like this.

Shelby looked down at the oil-stained driveway to the denim-clad legs protruding from underneath the ancient Ford. The hem of the jeans was frayed, the worn cowboy boots dusty and with a few stains of their own.

She propped her hands on her hips, doing her best not to tap her foot in irritation. It would do no good. If there was one thing she’d learned in her time as Ritt McCoy’s wife, he had his own timetable and to hell with anyone else’s.

“I said, I need to talk to you.”

“And I said, just a minute,” his muffled voice returned.

Shelby bit back a growl and used the thick packet of papers to fan herself. That was one thing she didn’t miss about Texas—the heat. But with any luck and the good Lord’s grace, she’d only be here another few minutes, an hour at the most, and then she’d be on her way back to California.

A trickle of sweat ran down between her shoulder blades and into the small of her back. Shelby fanned harder and checked her watch. She’d been waiting twenty minutes for Ritt to finish whatever it was he was doing to the truck and sign on the dotted line. That was nineteen more than she cared to wait.

“Ritt.”

“Shelby.”

“I need you to sign these.”

“In a minute.”

“Now. I have a plane to catch.”

She jumped back, nearly snapping the heel off one peep-toe pump. They had been a special purchase for this trip along with the form-fitting black dress that hugged her like a second skin. Scrambling to get out of the way, she managed to maintain her balance as Ritt pushed the creeper from under the truck.

And there he was, the boy who stole her heart, took her virginity and married her all in one summer. Well, he’d had her heart for years before that. And he wasn’t a boy any longer; though the years, she grudgingly admitted, had been very kind to him.

“What?” he asked. Even lying down, he looked taller, broader, more. She was glad to have the advantage, standing over him like she was.

“I’m in a hurry.”

“Not my problem.” He disappeared in a quick swoosh back under the truck. But he left his image behind. Dark blond hair curling from under a ratty Longhorns baseball hat. Dirt smeared T-shirt covering a chest she didn’t remember as having quite so many muscles. Long legs, firm lips, square jaw.

“I’ve flown over a thousand miles to get you to sign these. The least you could do is get out from under there and do it.” Her voice rose in pitch, the whine she’d been tamping down rising to the surface. Couldn’t he see how they needed this? That it was time to move forward?

There was a loud clunk, which sounded like head versus oil pan, then a muffled curse.

He rolled out again, and before she knew what had happened he was towering over her. She took a couple of steps back for good measure, unable to meet his blue-gold gaze as he studied her face.

“What is it, Shelby? What is so important that you flew all the way out here to grace me with your presence?”

She was wrong. The years had been more than kind to him, they had outright adopted him. Had he always been this tall? This broad? This…masculine?

He had, she decided. But after seven years away, she had forgotten what a man her Texas boy had been.

She licked her lips, the sight of him bringing back more memories than she cared to delve through. Prom night, at the lake after the baseball games, Saturday afternoon in the canyon…

Bossy dragons...

If I'd known dragons were such nagging taskmasters, I never would've invited them to my home. Sigurd Castlebound and Fergus Greenscale just informed me stories do not write themselves while the author is frittering away her time looking at pictures of Scotland and bare-chested Highlanders on the internet. They even had the audacity to suggest installing a firewall to hinder my access to such sites!

Jasper is no help either. Apparently, the three of them have formed some strange dragon dog alliance to ensure I remain focused.

Well. I guess there's no helping it. Three against one are tall odds I can't overcome. So just so you know, I haven't disappeared. I'm being held captive by a dog and two dragons until I get my current series finished. By the way, you'll hear more about this series later on. It's contracted with Random House Loveswept!

Oh my. I must go now. Fergus just opened one eye and gave me THE look. *sigh*

Key Words: Adult, Romance, Sweet, Contemporary, Anthology

They say love conquers all, but whoever "they" are, must not have heard of Murphy's Law -- whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.

These five tales of sweet, accidental romance prove Cupid's arrows are a lot tougher than they seem, and sometimes it pays to be unlucky.

Falling For You by Michelle Ziegler

Andrew was the one man she’d always loved, but neither of them ever made a move. But, old feelings aren’t the only thing resurfacing of late. Darci’s ex comes crawling back at the most inappropriate time, and with all the testosterone flying, she might not end up with either man.

Coffee and Cufflinks by Annabelle Blume
Fresh out of a failed relationship and exhausted by a constant barrage of fiascos at work, Olivia Johnson doesn’t see the man of her dreams standing right in front of her. She tells herself the morning coffee meet-ups with Daren are nothing but coincidence, but even she can’t deny his unequivocal attractiveness. When a night entertaining clients takes a turn for the worst, and Daren shows up where she least expects him, failure starts to look more like fate.

A Slippery Slope by Rebecca Hart
Anne Montgomery is psyched for her girl’s only weekend, despite her friends’ choice of vacation locale—the snowy slopes of Harris Peak Ski Resort—where someone as notoriously accident prone as she has no business being. When Murphy’s Law finally catches up with her, Anne is forced to consider there may be times when it pays to be unlucky.

The Shamrock Incident by London Saint James
Florist, Marissa Carmichael isn’t usually a klutz, but she’s in a hurry and having a bad day. In her haste, she loses her balance and tumbles from the back room of her shop, arms flailing. Her less than graceful entrance halted by a headfirst crash into a display case chock full of silk flowers.
Trey Cleary didn’t think his day could get any worse, until he finds. himself picking the side view mirror of his BMW up from the ground. On a mission to do something about it, he locates the flower shop matching the name on the back of the van that mangled his ‘baby'. But, his car is forgotten when a beautiful woman bursts into the room like an out of control whirling dervish, and takes one mother of a wipeout into the shop’s counter. Coming to her aid brings out the hero in him like no one he’s ever encountered, and leaves him with a need to know more.
For Marissa and Trey, this just might be the one time it pays to be unlucky.

Sneak Peek Sunday - Stone Guardian

In this sneak peek, Torin “convinces” Emma she’s a very desirable woman:
“You don’t know squat.” Emma snorted. “That man, Alex, only wants us to get along so the atmosphere at the clinic won’t be so intense. He can’t stand my company any more than I can stand his. He’s doing all this for the sake of the children.”
“Ye truly believe that?” Torin stared at Emma trying to ignore how inviting she looked when righteous indignation colored her skin. How could the woman be so damn blind? Torin didn’t even have to use his mystical senses to pick up on Alex Mackenzie’s  obvious interest in the fuming woman standing before him. Could she be that oblivious to her effect on men? To the temptation she presented as soon as she walked into a room? “Yer a beauty, woman, and when your scent fills the room, it teases a man until his body aches with the pain of needing to take ye.”
Emma grew still and she ran the tip of her tongue in a nervous swipe across her lips. “You’re wrong. You’ve got no idea what you’re talking about. I’m just plain old Emma. Ms. Dependable, squared.”
With a frustrated growl, Torin pulled her into his arms and clenched her tight against the hardened length of his body. “Does it feel like I’m wrong, Emma? Listen to me with what your body feels instead of with what your mind tells ye.”
Emma gasped. Against every logical reason blaring in her head, she instinctively melted into his demanding embrace until his heart hammered against her breasts. Torin didn’t feel wrong. He felt very—ready, willing, tempting and all those other adjectives setting her body on fire. A wondrous heat weakened her knees as she molded into the delicious hardness trapped beneath his kilt. She smoothed her fingers down the raised outline of the ebony tattoos circling across his bulging biceps. She’d never been with a man like Torin. Her breath caught as she met his gaze and found excruciating need reflected in his face. Could she do this? Should she?
Torin dipped his head and settled Emma’s inner debate with a kiss. He pulled her tighter against his lean hardness and opened her mouth with his. His lips, his hands, that inquisitive tongue all demanded entry—demanded complete submission. Emma’s mind whirled as her body erupted with an age-old need. Hell yes, I can do this.

Following my Moral Compass

My latest paranormal romance, STONE GUARDIAN was released this week but I haven’t really been shouting it from the rooftops. As a matter of fact, I think I’ve only tweeted it once. No blog tour. No Facebook posts. I’ve just pretty much kept it to myself. Why? Because I’m following my moral compass.
You see, starting on April 22nd and running through April 26th, STONE GUARDIAN is going to be FREE on Kindle as part of a promotional program. While my writerly heart is thrilled to introduce Torin and Emma to the world, my writerly soul says, “Now wait a minute…”
Look at it this way. Have you ever bought something and then within a day or two or maybe even a week or so later, you discover that very same item is now on SALE at such a reduced price it might as well be free? Yet you paid full price and there’s nothing you can do about it. Doesn’t that just chap your cheeks when that happens? Yeah. Me too. Ticks me off ROYALLY.
So…my moral compass poked my conscience and said, “If stuff like that makes YOU mad, how can you promote the bejeebers out of your new story now when you know it’s going to be free in April? How can you do that to your readers?”
I can’t.
But I can show off my new baby and tell you if you’re interested, it will be free on Kindle starting April 22nd through April 26th on Amazon. I can also tell you that I’ll be giving away three print copies in a Goodreads Giveaway at some point next month.
So…I know I may sound crazy. But you might want to wait to buy my book. ;-)
And now I’d like to introduce you to STONE GUARDIAN.
Be careful what you wish for…
All he wanted was to end his fate. All she wanted was a new beginning. They both got just what they asked for just not like they planned.
When the gods realize the beast they unleashed should never have been unshackled, they throw together modern-day Emma and ancient Torin to set the world aright. Now the mismatched pair must fully embrace their powers, meld them and send the demon back to his hell. But what Emma and Torin don't realize is there's a troubling side-effect to melding magic. Hearts tend to get tangled too even when the two souls aren't comfortable in each other's worlds.
Excerpt:
Thunder echoed in the distance. Emma jerked her gaze upward, searching the graying clouds rolling across the horizon. Geez, this place is spooky. Rubbing her arms again, Emma wished Laynie were here. Baby sister would lighten the mood. A pang of loneliness swept through her.
Stumbling over a dried clump of grass sprouting in the middle of the path, Emma bit back a muttered curse and hurried faster up the route. Maybe coming to the Isle of Lewis wasn’t one of her best-thought-out plans. So far, everything about her stay had been less than favorable.
As she stood at the base of the center stone, Emma shielded her eyes and strained back to take in its impressive height. The summer sun battled through the gathering clouds and crowned the looming megalith. Imbedded crystals atop the stone sparked into a blinding beacon radiating sizzling white lasers of pulsating light. The blazing rays dizzied and swayed her, spinning her against the stone. With a dull thwack, her head slammed against a jutting edge of the center rock. Emma squinted against the sting of tears while she rubbed her throbbing temple.
“Dammit! I’ve had just about enough bad luck for one day. How about sending me something good instead of tormenting the living crap out of me? Why don’t you send me the answer to all my problems or some kind of magic wand I can use to fix everything wrong with the world? Geez, you’d think you could grant me sort of good wish instead of whacking me on the head.”
“Answers are always held within. Ye must train yourself to hear them when they speak.”
Emma screeched. Her heart pounded into her throat as she dropped into a crouch and groped for the nearest weapon she could reach. Locating a good-sized rock, she clenched the jagged shard in a trembling fist and backed against the rough-edged obelisk. Emma struggled to control her breathing as she faced the shadowed mountain of a man who’d just appeared from behind the stone. “Who the hell are you and where did you come from?”
With slow, careful movements, the bare-chested man raised both hands level with his shoulders and spread his fingers, displaying empty palms. A crooked smile flashed across what part of his face she could see and his thundering voice lowered to a throaty purr. “Easy now, lass. I mean ye no harm.”

Procrastinating...

There's hoards of things I should be doing today –absolute hoards. But I've got a head cold, haven't slept well in two days and I've completely succumbed to a terminal case of couch-potato-lazy-itis.

So rather than risk doing anything productive, I’ve been wandering through the photo files on my laptop. In case there are any fellow couch-potato-lazy-itis sufferers, I thought I’d share some of my favorites.

~ * ~
Rowena sprang to her feet.
Someone was coming. And based upon the thundering hoof beats and thrashing
branches tearing through the forest behind her, whoever it was cared little for
masking their approach.

Dammit. All night and late into the next evening she'd ridden as if the devil himself had pursued her. She'd purposely stayed off the roads, traveling the old tracks instead, and even stopped several times to set false trails. Not until Helios approached the western horizon and she'd discovered this small clearing inside a copse of thick evergreens had she happily made camp. Her body ached with exhaustion, but her fatigue was a small price in return for the confidence that she'd finally put enough distance between her and the realm of Austiere. Surrounded on all sides by dense trees, the hidden location ensured the smoke from her fire would remain concealed. No one would be able to get close without providing plenty of warning.

The dull pummel of incoming hooves increased and she gritted her teeth, kicked some dirt over her small well-made fire and rushed for the nearest fir. A flick of her hand and Dart took wing, disappearing into the forest just above where she'd used a small wire wicket to tether Belial. Whoever was coming had better have their affairs in order. They were about to be on a first-name basis with the nine.

The bark prickled and dug into
her palms as she swung hands to feet up the branches, ascending to mid-tree
height before she crouched on a sturdy branch on the balls of her feet.

Exhibiting all the grace of an enraged bull, a hooded rider crashed into her camp. The horse's dancing halt disrupted her bedroll, flinging dirt all over her plated dinner. Jerk. The intruder had to be male, what with this presumed sense of entitlement, thinking nothing of ruining her perfectly arranged camp, soiling her property. She eased two silver blades from the sides of her leather pants and fisted the slender handles in her grip.

Hello, stranger.
Care to dance?

In a fluid movement which contradicted his initial appearance, the rider leapt off his horse and knelt before her sputtering fire. The sides of his cloak billowed past his shoulders. Thick muscle pulled his leather pants taut around his thighs. And those arms...the black vambraces...the leather cords encircling his biceps.

She slumped. Well, for the sweet
love of Helios. Exactly how far did she have to travel to get away from the
man?

Prince Caedmon pinched a bit of
ash between his thumb and first two fingers, rubbed them together and lifted
them to his nose. Rowena squinted past the branches as he rounded the fire and approached
her saddlebags. He squatted to rifle the contents, his back facing her, his
hood hiding his profile from view. She scowled. Most likely, his intent was to
drag her kicking and screaming back to the castle. But she wasn’t about to sit
idly by while he got his grubby mitts all over her supplies.

She sheathed her blades and swung silently to the ground. Motions steady and even, carefully shifting her weight, she reclaimed her knives as she side-stepped twigs and piles of dusty leaves. For all her caution, her concerns were unwarranted. The bog ox was so preoccupied with searching her belongings, she could've easily stomped all over the place without distracting him.

A soundless bounce on the tips of
her boots and she pounced, knees straddling his wide back, crossed blades
pressed along the thin skin under his jaw. “I’m officially pissed off,” she
hissed in his ear. “And if you plan to see tomorrow, you’ll do exactly as I
say.”

The next instant she was flying
backward through the air. Her teeth clattered on impact and her blades
scattered as she landed on her rump in the dirt. She shook her head to regain
her bearings.

How in the hell had he dislodged
her so quickly? And which hurt worse? Her bruised ass or her pride? She quickly
scrambled to her feet.

Tendons flexed and every muscle in his arms bulged as Prince Caedmon tore the cloak off his shoulders and chucked the garment aside. A silver chime hummed through the air as he unsheathed his sword the fro the scabbard at his back and fisted the hilt in his hand. Anger smoldered in the depths of his chocolate-brown eyes, but if that fierce glare was meant to make her shriek and scamper into the woods, the man and his stubborn male pride had another think coming.

She notched up her chin and met him scowl for scowl. Not for one second would she let him intimidate her. No constructs governed the ways of the forest. Out here, survival was the only decree, and if risking injury was the price for her freedom, she was happy to end this test of will come what may.

“It’s time you learned a thing or
two, my love.”

Ha! Could he be any more condescending? On a
click and whirr, her wrist blades snapped home and she hugged her chest, widening
her legs into her warrior’s stance. “Too bad Denmar’s not here to save your
ass. It’s high time we settle our differences once and for all.”
